Android phone turns itself off and stays off

Has your Android smartphone been powering off for no particular reason? Do you go to use your phone and find that it is off? When using the phone will it just turn itself off randomly? This issue can be pretty frustrating. Sometimes when this happens the device won’t even power on again unless the battery is pulled out and put back in or a simulated battery pull is performed. This article will go over some things that can be done to get this issue resolved and hopefully allow for a more permanent solution and prevent your android phone from powering itself off.

Check your applications

When did you first notice this issue happening on your phone? Was it around the same time that you downloaded an application?

Applications can cause weird issues on Android phones sometimes. Try and think back to when you first started noticing your phone powering off and uninstall any applications that you might have downloaded, or updated, around that time. Try your phone without the application(s) and see if it fixes it. If it does then I would keep it off the phone and enjoy.

Battery check

Most Android phones have an option available that will allow you to test the battery.

Check your Android version. If your Android OS (Operating System) is below the 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, for example it says 2.3.x (Gingerbread) 2.2.x (Froyo) or worse yet 2.1.x. Then try testing the battery with a special STAR CODE.

If the Android OS is below 4.0 then here is what you do.

Open up your Dialer, as though you were going to type in a telephone number, and instead of a phone number type in *#*#4636#*#* or *#*#INFO#*#*. A screen should pop up all by its self with a bunch of options. Tap on Battery Information, then check on the batteries health and make sure it says good. If it says poor or unknown error then power off the phone count to ten and then power the phone back on, open your dialer and type in the code again, tap battery information and if it still doesn’t say good then your battery is going out and needs to be replaced.

You can get a pretty affordable battery on Amazon but if your phone is less than a year old then your battery should be covered under your manufactures warranty and you might be able to get a new replacement battery for FREE. Check out How to file a warranty claim for more information about warranty options that might be available.

If your battery health is showing good and the battery scale says 100 then that is what it should be showing and I suggest you keep reading.

Android version

Did this happen after upgrading your Android phone to a more up to date Android Operating System? If so then chances are it wasn’t a bad upgrade but still an application issue. An app on the phone might not be getting along with the new Operating System and that might be what’s causing the problem. Go through and remove some apps, try the phone, remove some apps, try it, until there are no more apps that you personally downloaded on the device.

If you remove all the applications that you can from the phone and it’s still powering off then its most likely a software issue, maybe not caused by an application, but possibly a software glitch, bug, virus, etc. Don’t worry though there is still hope, you just got to clean the phone up a bit by performing a reset.

Battery pull

Before looking into performing a reset on the phone pull the battery out and make sure that it’s still in good shape. It most likely will be in good shape if the battery test that you ran said the battery health was good but you never know.

If you remove the battery and it looks warped or bloated, or doesn’t fit snug in the phone, or rocks back and forth on a flat surface meaning the battery isn’t flat, then the battery might indeed be bad. If your phone is powering off and you cannot get it to power back on again without pulling the battery then you most likely got a software issue and a reset should help.

Backup and reset

Kind of a last resort BUT a fix all solution in most phone related issues, especially software related issues, is to perform a full backup saving all the information that’s saved on your phone to another medium and then erasing everything on the phone. It sounds a little extreme but DON’T PANIC it’s really not as bad as it sounds and it really does fix most phone issues.

Besides, you should get into the good habit of backing up your phone on a regular basis anyways just in case your phone ever does have a serious malfunction, gets broken, or even lost or stolen. It’s always a god idea to have at least one other copy of your important information just in case.

Before going into your settings and factory data resetting your device I recommend you read How to backup and reset an Android phone for a guide on how to backup your important information first. Because a reset sets the phone back to how it was when it came off the shelf. Your phone is going to think it’s brand new again.

Warranty

And that should do it. If for some mysterious reason the Factory Data Reset doesn’t fix the phone, you’ve tried using the phone after the reset with no third party applications and as a clean install, your phones software is up to date, you tried a different battery, and your phone is still powering off for no apparent reason what so ever then your phone is defective and I recommend you read I can’t fix my phone now what should I do for some suggestions.

Otherwise enjoy your working phone, thank you for reading and don’t hesitate to leave a comment below.

My mobile some times automatically switched off. I have updated software two times but problem has repeated. What should I do?

My samsung galaxy went off as soon as i started downloading Whatsapp messenger and has since then failed to start up. What could be the plight?

    1. Hum… Hard to say…

      Hi Deus,

Hard to say for sure, sometimes apps may not play well with each other but usually phones don’t just crash as soon as you start to download them…

Sometimes phones malfunction too though; they work perfectly and all of a sudden DEAD. Hopefully this isn’t the case here because when that happens it can be hard to fix.

      • What model of Samsung Galaxy are you having this problem with?
      • Did you have any issues before it powered off on you?
      • Can you get ANY response from it whatsoever?
      • Does it respond if you plug it into a charger?
      • Have you tried holding the power button for over 30 seconds?
      • Have you tried removing the battery for a few minutes, reinserting it, and then trying to power it on?
      • Have you tried charging it all night?
      • Do you have access to a different battery? If so have you tried a different battery?
      • Have you tried multiple chargers?

If you cannot get a response at all and the phone is completely dead and a different battery and different charger doesn’t seem to help then you’re probably going to need to look into your replacement or repair options.

  3. Phone will not turn back on
Ok so, a few weeks ago, my android galaxy s3 phone abruptly turned off while I was using it. I don’t exactly remember what I was doing, but I know I wasn’t downloading anything, it just turned off. I tried turning it back on many times but it would just appear with “Samsung galaxy s3” in white letters, and then it would go black and stay like that. Eventually however, on the same afternoon it did turn back on (a few hours later).

The same problem is happening today, starting from yesterday. Yesterday it would turn off randomly, but I could turn it back on without any faults. Until one certain point it wouldn’t turn back on. If I press down the power button, nothing will happen, unless before I do that I take off the battery and put it back in. When I do this, the thing with the “Samsung Galaxy s3” coming up in white letters, as I mentioned before, happens but not always. What can I do??? It’s not turning back on. Please help.

    1. Trying to turn on your Samsung Galaxy S3

Try charging it for a few hours, if you have not already done so, and if the phone still refuses to power on properly then there may be an issue with the software. If you cannot get it to power on correctly then you may need to try a hard reset. If there was something on the phone causing it not to boot up like it should then a hard reset would clear or erase whatever that “something” was. Unfortunately a hard reset also removes everything else too so it’s kind of a last resort. If you can’t power on your phone though then your options are going to be very limited.

If you can get your phone to power on like it’s supposed to then I would do a full backup and perform a hard reset through the settings for good measure to try and keep it from happening again.

This issue can be hard to fix sometimes so if it keeps happening you may need to look into replacing the unit.

From your description it doesn’t sound like a battery issue but if you can get it to power on properly try to run a battery check as well to make sure the battery is still healthy. To run a battery check on the Samsung Galaxy S3 open the dialer and type in *#*#4636#*#* or *#*#INFO#*#*, click on the Battery Information option and it should tell you a lot of info about your battery, including its health. If the Battery Health is anything but “Good” then reboot, check again, and if it’s still doesn’t say “Good” then the battery is likely going out and you might want to consider replacing it.

  4. My Samsung Galaxy Grand turns off
I have a Samsung Galaxy Grand and it gets turned off automatically and restarts only when i remove the battery and insert the battery again. Can anybody help me out with this??

    1. I also faced the same problem
I also faced the same problem. I read many comments on the net and found two reasons for that – software/apps, and or hardware problems. For me the McAfee Antivirus was creating the problem. The phone is working as usual after uninstall of McAfee.

I know its too late to reply, but might be helpful for others…

    1. Trying to fix a Sony Xperia that will not power on

      Hi John,

Most Sony Xperia smartphones don’t have removable batteries. Make sure that you try a Simulated Battery pull on your Sony Xperia T for sure, chances are it’s exactly what you are looking for and can often get a Sony Xperia back up and running properly again.

Good luck john. If you have any more questions then don’t hesitate to ask.

  5. I have a Samsung galaxy mega
I have a Samsung galaxy mega and I just replaced the screen and digitizer. My phone was working great until it updated. Once it was done updating it said I needed to restart my phone. Now it restarts and shuts offf repeatedly. I never get past the Samsung galaxy mega logo. I’ve had it on the charger… I’ve taken the battery out for a while and replaced it… Took out my SIM card and the battery now it’s turned on but it’s stuck on the Samsung galaxy mega logo and doesn’t go any further. Please help!

  6. HTC Phone
    Hai,
I am using an HTC Desire V phone. I am facing a lot of problems with my phone turning itself off and on. I read and implemented all of the methods mentioned above to resolve the problems but the problem which I mentioned before still occurs. What should I do without going to repair shop? Please help me to get out from this problem.

    1. I suppose that you could try this…

      Hi,

Sorry to hear that your HTC Desire V is having power issues. Make sure to review this other guide about trying to fix an Android smartphone that powers itself off and on for some additional tips that might be relevant in trying to resolve your current problem.

This specific power issue can be really hard to solve yourself and I tried to include all of the standard troubleshooting that you yourself can do to try and fix it in the article above and the article I linked to in this post.

If you have already tried EVERY one of those suggestions and your HTC cell phone is still having issues and you are looking for any other suggestions that may help before having to look into your repair or replacement options then I suppose that there is one other thing that you can try just for good measure.

A hard reset should have resolved any software issues resulting from a bad application or anything that might have been added to the phone through standard use. If however, there is a software bug or something wrong with the software installation itself a hard reset might not correct it. This is REALLY rare but since you asked… I thought I would mention it.

If you are looking for any other advice or options that you could try then you could use a program like Odin to flash a custom or stock version of Android to your HTC Desire V which would give you a nice and clean installation and pretty much rule out possible software concerns.

If that doesn’t help solve your problem and your HTC still turns itself off and on then it’s likely a hardware problem in which case you can choose to put up with the issue or you will have to look into your repair and or replacement options.

  7. My mom has a MyTouch phone.
My mom has a MyTouch phone. At Grandma’s House, the problem is Mom’s phone will shutdown in 30 seconds. The reason why it shut itself down, I failed to plug in. And mom said 30 seconds ran out. And when I started Mom’s phone up, it was around 40-50%. And I tried Farm Heroes. But I exited out of the game, the phone said it is 15% or less. The battery was 0%. And Mom’s phone shuts down. But first, the phone will shutdown in 30 seconds. And then shut itself down again. When I started it up again, the battery was around 20-25%. At home, the battery was 15% or less and I had to power off before 30 seconds runs out and the phone shut down by itself.

  8. Phone turning off by itself
My comment does not concern the solution to the unexpected turn-off of an Android smartphone, but rather one of your suggestions to solve this problem. Within the main article you indicate, as a “last resort” fix, to Backup and reset. But, as far as I know, if after resetting you use the previous backup to restore operation, you are reinstating exactly the situation you had at the moment you backed up. Just as any backup is supposed to behave. So, at the end of the story, you would find yourself exactly with the same problem you had initially.
    Where am I wrong?

    Salvatore

    1. That’s a good question, Yes and No

      Hi Salvatre,

You ask a very good question and you make a very good point. You would not want to restore whatever was actually causing the problem back to the phone or, as you said, you would likely find yourself in the exact same situation.

Since a hard reset removes all of the information (user data) from a cell phone though there are many things that a person would really not want to part with if they didn’t have to. This includes photos, pictures, images, music, text messages, videos, etc some of which could be very important or be of great value to the individual in many circumstances.

These types of files typically will not be the direct cause of a problem on an Android smartphone. What does often cause problems is a program or piece of software that was downloaded onto the phone from a third part source. This includes Apps from the Play Store and especially Apps or programs or custom software acquired through none official sites off of the internet. While these programs might not have been intended to cause problems they might need further testing, developing or updating to work properly on your specific cell phone or its version of Android or in order to play nice with other apps and software already installed on your smartphone.

After you have performed a hard reset you could try your cell phone as a clean slate to see if the problem still exists. If it does, and your phone continues to have issues even after having everything wiped clean then the issue lies on the phone itself and you can rule out something that was put onto the phone as being the culprit.

If however the phone works properly after the hard reset you could slowly start to add your backed up information to the device slowly. Adding something then trying the device, adding something else and using the device, etc. Then if you add something to your phone and the device starts to experience issues you can narrow it down to that data which was most recently added to the phone as being the cause and could act accordingly.

So you are not wrong, and I hope that this explanation helps to answer your question. If you have any more questions then don’t hesitate to ask.

      1. Salvatre Iannazzo

        Hello James, and thank you
Hello James, and thank you for the detailed answer. Which however implies that the problem requires a much longer effort than a simple backup and restore operation.

        Regards,

        Salvatore

        1. It depends…

          Your welcome Salvatre,

The time it takes will depend on how much information you want or need to restore back to your cell phone. Just like a Computer you need to keep an eye on what you choose to put onto your cell phone and if you have chosen to install a lot of applications and programs you might have to weed out any that might be causing problems. It really depends on the situation.

If you don’t have a lot of important data on your mobile and don’t really need to restore anything then you could just reset it and use it as a clean slate. The reset part is the important step as it can help remove any problematic software (bad apps, viruses, bugs, corrupted or malfunctioning programs or other data, etc).

    1. Trying to fix your malfunctioning cell phone

      Hi Ashwani,

Sometimes cell phones malfunction and power themselves off and never turn back on again. Hopefully this isn’t what happened with your cell phone.

Some cell phones like Sony Xperia phones, some Motorola phones, and other smartphones that do not have removable batteries may allow you to do a simulated battery pull, which could help, and if your phone is one of these phones than you might want to do little bit of research to see if you can perform a simulated battery pull on your cell phone. What have you done so far to try to resolve the issue yourself and what cell phone are you having problems with?

  10. My phone switch off automatically
My smathphone Panasonic P-81 switch off automatically and its 2 months old phone. I need to remove the battery and put it to turn it on again. When it is idle automatically switch off and without removing the battery i cannot turn it on…. plz help….

  11. My Galazy SII wont start up
I have a Samsung Galaxy SII and I’ve had this problem before. My phone will shut off at random times. It doesn’t happen often, only one or two days every once in a while. When it does happen, it doesn’t come back on for a while. It will shut off and vibrate every 2-3 seconds and wont turn back on. When I “fixed” it in the past, I just hit the back of the phone and then tried to turn it on. It seemed to work then, but I want a permanent solution to this problem. Its definitely a problem with taking in power. I had it plugged in with the battery out and it still had the issues like when it was unplugged and had a battery. The phone isn’t close to dead either. It charged all night. Please help

    1. Samsung Galaxy SII powering off randomly

      Hi Patrick,

A strange issue you have there. I have seen that issue before but it’s been a while and if I remember correctly it was pretty difficult to try and fix. If “hitting the back of the phone” seems to help then it sounds like a hardware problem. Something within the phone might be loose or may be malfunctioning. Hard to tell for sure but if I had to guess I would lean towards a hardware issue.

Have you attempted to backup and reset your Samsung Galaxy SII just to try and rule out a problem with a bad app or a software issue? What have you done so far in order to try and resolve this annoying issue, apart from tapping the phone and apart from leaving it on the charger without the battery (which was very cleaver by the way as this may have helped to rule out the battery as being the culprit).

Like I said it’s probably going to be difficult to pinpoint the exact cause in order to resolve the problem especially if the problem is hardware specific, and if you do find a likely reason then it will be hard to verify if the problem is truly resolved or not as I am sure that this specific issue is pretty sporadic.

      1. Thanks for the help
        James

Thanks for the help. Any ideas on how to back it up when it won’t turn on? Thanks again.

        1. Trying to backup data from a phone that won’t power on

          Your welcome Patrick,

If you cannot power the phone on at this point then backing up the data on your cell phone is unfortunately not going to be an option. Some of your cell phones information may be already backed up or may be salvageable though. Your contacts for example may have been automatically backed up to your Google Account in which case all you would need to do is visit google.com/contacts to view your phones address book or simply log into your primary Gmail account again on an another Android and your Android should re-sync all of this information for you. Your cell phones Calendar is another thing that might have been saved to your Google account.

I am not sure if your Samsung Galaxy SII has a memory card but some information might also be saved to that card as well, depending on if you setup your phone to store pictures or save information directly to the memory card.

All in all if the information isn’t already backed up somewhere other than your cell phone and your mobile phone won’t turn on then recovering data from your cell phone is not likely going to be possible. Make sure to try to get into a good habit of backing up your cell phones information every once in a while just as a precaution. You never know when it may malfunction or heaven forbid it gets damaged or something else happens that’s totally outside of your control.

  12. Phone shut down by itself
As you can see I also have this stupid frustrating problem. But after reading your article I found out my problem is serious. The battery of my phone is bad and when I put it on a flat service it keeps rocking back and forth. What should I do? Should I replace the battery or back up and reset?

    1. Both

      Hi Zach,

You might want to create a backup, as it’s a good habit to get into, and then get a replacement battery. I am not sure what cell phone you have but replacement batteries are often surprisingly affordable, especially online at sites like Amazon, and if your current battery is misshapen or warped and as a result is malfunctioning then you should replace it.

If a replacement battery doesn’t seem to work (and from your brief description it sounds like it will) then you could try a hard reset. Or you could even try a hard reset for good measure before getting a replacement battery.

So to answer your question – Yes, you might want to try all of those things but the order in which you try them will be entirely up to you.

  13. Samsung Phone Turns Itself Off
I have had this problem for the last few days with my Samsung Neo Pocket ST5310. It kept shutting down in my pocket but never when I left it laying on the table.I tried a battery pull, uninstalled unnecessary apps etc to no avail. Then this morning I chucked it down on the table from a height of a couple of inches and it went off. I remembered this used to be an issue with some early Nokias; due to battery contacts getting a bit weaker, which allowed the battery to move a bit. The solution then (and now) was to gently bend the phone’s battery contact pins very slightly with a small screwdriver. With my old Nokia I also used to insert a thin piece of cardboard at the opposite end of the battery to prevent any movement and keep it pressed firmly against the contact pins.

    1. Thanks for Contributing Andy

Thank you Andy for taking the time to leave such a good post on how you were able to solve this problem on your Samsung. I am sure that other people can greatly benefit from it.

Keep up the fantastic work and thanks again.

  14. Phone is not turning on.
My micromax canvas ego A113 switched off on its own.
I am sure that I wasn’t downloading anything. I was just reading something over Google chrome when it automatically switched off and now it’s not turning on.
I took the battery out several times and tried to switch it on but it didn’t.
Please help me, what should I do to try and fix this problem?

    1. It might have malfunctioned…

      Hi Nisharg,

Sorry to hear about your cell phone. From your description it sounds like you might have just experienced the really bad luck of having a cell phone crash for no particular reason. Sometimes a phone will, without warning, turn off and refuse to ever power on again. I suppose this is true for just about any electronic but this is extremely unfortunate when it happens to a cell phone that’s just over a year old as the phones manufacture is usually no longer responsible for it as the phones warranty has expired at that point. This holds true for the battery as well; but I digress.

If you have followed the advice listed above and your cell phone has become completely lifeless and doesn’t even respond to a charger or another battery then you will likely need to look into your replacement options.

  15. Phone shutting off by itself
Hi, I hope that this forum is still open and that I get a response. My Samsung Galaxy S 4 Active shuts down by itself despite having like over 50% charge and when I try to turn it back on, it refuses to. I never tried removing the battery to see if it will restart, however, what I do is plug it in to charge and the battery symbol that comes up when the phone is off but charging, shows either that it has like 50% charge and is now continuing to charge, or, that it is completely dead and it’s now getting recharged. Please keep in mind that the battery did in fact already have like 50% charge on it. It started one afternoon while on a call and now it happens almost daily. Please help.

    1. Hum… hard to say what the exact cause is…

      Hi Adesha,

Sorry to hear that your Samsung is having problems and has for some reason started powering itself off. This issue can be a hard one to solve and narrowing down the exact cause can sometimes be a bit of a challenge.

Make sure to try ALL of the suggestions in the article above including a review of all your applications (especially any apps that you might have downloaded around the same time the problem started). If you can’t seem to find any app(s) that might be the cause then you should backup your phone and then try a Hard Reset. After the reset you can use the phone for a while in its clean, bare, and like new condition and on its default settings. Not downloading any apps (or anything else) for a few days (if possible).

Since you mentioned this is nearly a daily occurrence you could use the phone for a couple of days and if it still powers off then you can look into your replacement options.

If it works properly and doesn’t power itself off then you can start re-downloading your apps one or two at a time and then try the phone for a couple of days with those apps, download a few more, try those apps, and if you download an app and you’re your phone starts to power off again then you can narrow the cause to the app(s) most recently installed and you can choose whether or not it’s worth having on the phone or not.

You can also look into trying a new/replacement battery but since you mentioned this happens even when the battery has a charge it’s kind of sounding like more of an issue with the phone as opposed to the battery.

  16. I Have A Samsung Galaxy S4
My phone started cutting on and off yesterday. But it cut right back on, now it barley comes on at all. It seems like when I’m actually on the phone talking to someone is when it stays on, but soon as I hang up the phone cuts right back off.

  17. My samsung galaxy trend restarts while installing an app
My samsung galaxy trend restarts while installing an applications.
Thus it doesn’t finish installing. Please help on that.

    1. Android restarts when trying to install an Application

      Hi Linguz,

You have a very uncommon and difficult problem to try to solve on your Android smartphone my friend. Let me ask you some questions that might help to narrow down and hopefully help to eliminate the cause of this problem.

      • Does this happen when you try to download and install a specific app or certain apps or does your phone reboot when trying to download and install any app from the Android Play Store? The App(s) that you are trying to download are from Androids official app market and not some third party site I am assuming?
      • How many third party apps that didn’t originally come with the phone would you say are installed on your smartphone already? Are their quite a few? If so does removing a few seem to help or not really?
      • I assume that restarting the phone (a soft reset) doesn’t seem to help? What about a hard reset? Have you attempted to perform a factory data reset on your phone yet?
      • Does your phone utilize an external memory card? If so and you remove the card from the phone are you able to install applications properly? What speed class is your memory card (if you do have one)?
      • Is your phone rooted or is it the original stock software? If your Samsung is rooted have you tried installing and using a different ROM?
      • Is your phone running on up to date software? This includes your Apps and the phones Operating System…
      • Does the app completely download and then fail to install or does the phone fail to download the app as well?
      • What troubleshooting have you already attempted in order to try to resolve this problem?

If you are still having problems with your phone rebooting when downloading or installing an application then let me know about all of these things and I will do what I can to try and help you resolve this rare, stubborn, and extremely annoying problem.

  18. Galaxy S III turns off by itself
I had a question about other possible causes for a phone shutting down.
I have a Galaxy S III. Over the past few months, the camera app frequently crashes with the message, “camera app has failed.” Then I started using a removable SD card.
I read on another site that sometimes low quality SD cards can cause a problem, so I removed it, but when I start an app that has permission to access the camera and SD card, my phone will turn off.
I have removed the SD card, the camera app still crashes, and I will soon be reinstalling the possible problem causing app because the phone continues to turn off.
Have you experienced situations where an SD card or the camera app may be the cause of a phone turning off?

If after I reinstall the potential problem-causing app the phone continues to turn off, I may do a factory reset. Also the phone worked fine for a year with this app on my phone. Thanks.

    1. SD card and App problems…

      Hi Andrew,

It’s rare but yes I have seen where a malfunctioning or defective SD card can cause such problems. Apps are typically the more likely culprit as they can crash and fail, as you pointed out, and can cause phones to crash too depending on the situation.

Out of curiosity have you had the opportunity to try a different SD card? Possibly even a different battery?

I suggest that the first thing that you try is to make sure that all of your apps are up to date and see if that helps at all. How often does your phone power off like that? Would it be possible to active Safe Mode and use the phone in Safe Mode for a while to see if the phone still powers off on you?

If you perform a factory reset and it doesn’t seem to help and your S3 even powers off when booted into Safe Mode then its less likely going to be a bad app, and is more likely going to be a hardware problem of some type.

  19. Galaxy s2
There were 2 instances where my s2, well, died. It turned off all of a sudden and didn’t take any charge. I tried pulling out the battery while charging, still nothing. I tried a battery pull and nothing. And I tried taking off the battery, putting it back on and pressing power button but still nothing. I had it looked at twice at a service center and both times they just issued me a replacement battery. They said it was the only issue, nothing on the button or the port. Twice the same problem and twice the phone died within a month and stopped charging all over again. Any thoughts?

    1. Samsung Galaxy Powering Off

      Hi Albert,

That’s not a very common problem to have on a Galaxy smartphone. Yes, it is true that batteries don’t last forever but having multiple batteries just suddenly stop working for no particular reason is pretty odd.

I’m not sure if this applies to your situation but make sure to charge your phones battery when it gets low and requires charging. Try not to let a battery drain completely or it can have issues charging and working again.

If replacing the battery seems to help solve your problem then this will typically indicate an issue with the battery as opposed to the phone. If this seems to become a pattern though, given its already happened twice, then perhaps your phone is eating batteries for some reason.

When the phone was working did you notice any power related problems like a quickly draining battery or has your cell phone shown any error messages, or done anything else odd lately?

I recommend that you plug your phone into a charger for a couple of days to see if you can get it to charge again. If charging through a wall charger doesn’t seem to help then try charging it through a USB connection using a computer instead. With any luck this will get the battery to start charging and you won’t have to get a replacement battery again. If not then you might have to look into getting another battery.

  20. Samsung Galaxy Trend S7580
Hi, my phone shuts down as soon as I am done downloading an app just when it is about to install it. What could be the problem?

    1. That sounds like it might be a memory or storage issue

      Hello Nehemiah,

Hard to say for certain but from the information that you have provided in your comment… if I was to make a guess, I would say that your cell phone has most likely run out of available storage space on its internal memory (the Samsung Galaxy Trend Plus only comes with 4GB of internal memory and only about 2.2GB of that storage space is available to the user). It sounds like your phone is trying to install the app but since there is no more space left to save it to the phone gets confused and powers off.

Try cleaning out some of the data from your internal storage as best you can and try moving as much information to an external SD card as well. Otherwise your phone may have reached its limit and you may not be able to save any more applications to it.

  21. I have an Alcatel onetouch
I have an Alcatel onetouch Idol MINI. until yesterday nothing was wrong. But yesterday I was just checking something and suddenly it stopped working. The screen blocked, and just to be sure, I dialed my phone number in another phone and called my phone. It said that I have turned off my phone. So I turned it back on with no problems whatsoever. For the next hour it was good. But then I got a phone call from my friend and she was telling me something. All of a sudden my phone turned off. First I thought it was because when she called my battery was showing 6%. But when I turned it on it gave me the 2% battery warning. So I charged it. But later that night, just to check if it was charged I tried to unlock the phone but I couldn’t. So I turned it on. It showed the black screen and it showed the Alcatel ometouch idol mini logo and a minute later it turned on. Okay the battery was still charging so I left it charge overnight. But I checked it again and I unlocked the phone without any problems but as soon as I tried to open an app, the app broke and the phone blocked again. So j left it like that and now when I woke up I checked the screen and it was still my home screen couple of hours later.
    I don’t know what to do…

  22. Phone won’t turn on
So, I have a Galaxy S3. For the past couple months it would have periods where it would randomly turn off a couple times and then be fine. But now it hasn’t turned back on for the past couple weeks. If I try to turn it on it will vibrate and show the start up screen and then turn back off. I’ve tried leaving it on the charger, replacing the battery, and leaving it alone for a couple of days. I can’t do a factory restart if it won’t turn on, right? Help!

    1. Samsung Galaxy S3

      Hello Christina,

You might be able to perform a reboot or hard reset through the Android system recovery tool.

If a hard reset is ineffective and your phone still refuses to power on then check out THIS GUIDE too. Your Samsung Galaxy S3 might be experiencing a more serious software issue and if that’s the case your phone will require some more advanced troubleshooting in order to try and resolve it.

  23. Tecno h6
Every night I charge my phone to full then I wake up in the middle of the night to unplug it. When I wake up the next morning, I usually find out that the phone has switched off and it doesn’t switch on again unless I remove the battery, please how can I stop this?

  24. Phone suddenly switches off and the battery level goes crazy
Hello, I am using a Xiaomi Redmi 2S prime. After a good use of 1 week it suddenly switched off. I can switch it on if I take out the battery 3 or 4 times and put it back in again. Also when the phone is on the battery level goes to 0% from 100% charge. This problem is arising continuously, I am unable to find any solution. Please help me.

    1. Trying to resolve power related problems on your Android

      Hello Junaid Ahmed,

To be perfectly honest I am not too familiar with that phone so the following advice will be drawn from the experience of working with Android smartphones as a whole as opposed to being device specific.

That being said your cell phone is certainly experiencing an odd and unpleasant issue. It’s difficult to determine from your description if your problem is software or hardware related… Other than pulling the battery out (good job by the way) have you done any other troubleshooting?

When your battery goes from 100% to 0% do you have to charge your phone all over again or if you can get your phone to power on does it have the same charge as it had when it powered off?

Have you been experiencing any other issues that you can think of? Have you received any error messages or anything of that nature? Did your phone allow you to perform a battery check as mentioned in the article above? If so what where the results? Have you had the chance to perform a hard reset and then use the phone as a clean slate to help try and eliminate a bad app or possible software problems?

You may need to try all of these things in order to pinpoint the cause of the problem and with any luck resolve it.

  25. Cellphone shut down by itself
My cellphone keeps shutting down even though its fully charged and I cant turn it on. It only turns on when plugged into a charger. When I remove the charger it shuts down again. What do you think is the problem? Is it my phone or the battery?

    1. Battery vs. Cell Phone

      Hi May,

From your description it sounds like the battery is the most likely culprit. It sounds like the phone can pull power from the charger but as soon as the charger is removed and the phone is forced to try to pull power from the battery it cant and powers off. Luckily a replacement battery is going to be a lot more affordable then a replacement cell phone too.

So give a new battery a try. There is a really good chance that a functional battery will be able to resolve your problem.

  30. Phone shuts down automatically
I have a Samsung J5 (2016). When the battery level is at 40% the phone works but the phone will shut down at various battery levels like 20%, 30% and also at 25% without saying “battery is low plug in charger”. Why?
