How to create a shortcut icon for an App on your Android

Did you just accidently delete one of the Apps from your phones main screen? Do you want to add a commonly used application to one of your home screens so you don’t have to keep searching through your App list to open it? Then you have come to the right place. This guide will show you step by step instructions with pictures on how to add an application to your Android smartphones main screen.

Deleted an App on accident

There is really good news! If you simply deleted the application from your phones Home screen then the application and all of its information is still on your phone because you didn’t actually delete the App you simply removed the shortcut icon to get to that application. Unless you went into your phones settings and actually uninstalled the application then it’s still going to be on your phone under the “Apps” and all you will need to do is re-create a shortcut for it.

Adding an App shortcut icon to the Home screen

This is actually very easy to do once you know how.

Since I like to listen to music often I am going to add the Music app to my main screen but you can do this with any of your commonly used apps such as a flashlight app, a shopping list app, a game, etc.

Start by accessing your Apps.

Then locate the application that you would like to access from the Home screen.

Remember that your applications are listed alphabetically. Since I am looking for the Music app I need to scroll over one more page by dragging on my touch screen from right to left.

Now that I see my Music app I am going to press down and hold on it.

Since I am using a Samsung Galaxy S4 for this demonstration and its running on Android 4.2 Jelly Bean it is going to allow me to, with my finger still presses down, drag my application to any part of my phones main screen that I would like.

Once I find a good location to place it I am going to release it and stop pressing down on my touch screen.

There will now be a shortcut icon on my main screen and if I want to access my Music app I can simply click on that Music icon instead of searching through my phones applications.

Side Note: On some older versions of Android this might be slightly different. After holding down on the application when viewing it under your list of apps it may give you an option to “Pin to desktop” or something similar instead of just allowing you to drag it where you would like it.

Rearranging or removing an App from your main screen

If you grow tired of an application on your main display or would like to customize your main screen and arrange your icons the way you want then the process is pretty much the same.

Go to your Home screen by tapping your Home key.

Then press and hold the app you would like to move.

You can then choose to move it to another spot or delete it from the Home screen by dragging it to the “Remove” icon which will appear after pressing and holding on the app in question.

That’s all there is to it

Now that you know how to move, remove and rearrange the applications shown on your main screen you can customize your phones display to appear however you would like.

  1. Accidentally erased icon
What I somehow erased is the icon to get me to the sound setting from my home screen. It isn’t in the apps. How can I get it back, please? Thank you.
